What is artificial intelligence?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science concerned
with understanding the nature of intelligence and developing technology
to perform activities that are normally thought to require intelligence.
AI technology often implies the ability to learn and adapt through
experience. Examples of AI technology that exhibits human intelligence
and behavior include robots, expert systems, voice recognition, natural
language processing, face recognition, handwriting recognition, game
intelligence, artificial creativity and more.
Zabaware's AI software, Ultra Hal, is artificial intelligence software
that utilizes natural language processing, which is the understanding of
natural human languages. Specifically, Ultra Hal is a chatterbot, a
computer program designed to simulate an intelligent conversation. It
utilizes an AI engine that is capable of learning from all
conversations. Every sentence you say to it is recorded in its database
and used to come up with responses in future conversations with you or
other people. This way over time the software can actually develop a
personality similar to your own.
Is Ultra Hal really intelligent? Intelligence is the capacity to acquire
knowledge and apply it as well as possessing a faculty of thought and
reasoning. By this definition, Ultra Hal is intelligent. Many people
tend to discount advances in AI after certain aspects of intelligence
are broken down into logical processes that a computer can follow.
People seem to redefine in their minds what intelligent behavior really
means. This is known as the AI effect. While Ultra Hal is not yet to the
level of human intelligence, we believe it does indeed have
intelligence. Whether or not this intelligence results in any form of
consciousness is much deeper philosophical question that is difficult to
answer.
